Breast Augmentation Using Stem Cells? Not Yet...

An interesting article claims that plastic surgeons in Europe and Japan are using stem cells for breast augmentation. It also states that some surgeons in the United States are also performing stem cell breast augmentation.

The closest thing to stem cell breast augmentation that I have experience with is fat grafting to the breast. Fat actually does contain a large amount of stem cells, and the procedure does work. However, due to significant controversy regarding its possible effects on mammography and breast cancer detection, I don't recommend it except in those situations where breast implants are not able to be used. The standard of care for breast augmentation is still the breast implant, and I expect that this will not change for a long time.

I know of no plastic surgeons in the U.S. who actually experiment with stem cells for breast augmentation.

Katrina Halili is Maxim's Cover Girl for September 2008. Katrina Halili has always been daring in her picturials. She is undoubtedly sexy and beautiful. She has starred in many soup opera as villain or "kontrabida". However in her latest project with GMA-7 she has shifted from villain to the leading lady. Her fans are not used to seeing her as the good girl, but Katrina proved that she can be a bad girl and a good girl too whenever her showbusiness career demands it.

Pam Anderson - No to Botox but Yes to Juvederm?

Here is a photograph of Pam Anderson during a recent press tour in Australia to promote her new reality show on E!. As you can see, there is no sign of any Botox in her forehead, but her lips look pretty plump, possibly due to Juvederm injections. The cupid's bow of her upper lip looks obliterated, which can happen when a good amount of injectable filler is placed there. This is one of the few photos that I've seen where Pam looks all of her 41 years. Maybe the jet lag hasn't been kind. I always look (and feel) like hell after a long plane flight.

Juvederm lasts around 6-12 months, and I find it works very well in the lips when injected conservatively.

No Medals for Filipinos in the Olympics

A sad news for everyone. The Olympics has ended and there is not any medal that the Philippine Team has obtained. The Philippine Team failed to get a gold medal, silver medal, nor a bronze medal. The 15 delegates to the Olympics did their best but their best wasn't that good enough. But at least the Philippines know that their athletes gave their best. The Philippines will wait for the next Olympic Games and will continue to dream and hope for an Olympic Medal.

Has Jennifer Aniston Had Her Lips Plumped?

Photos of Jennifer Aniston have recently surfaced, showing a possible lip augmentation. If she's had it done, it is a subtle job, possibly with Restylane. Some may argue that her lips look the same, but if you compare the 'then' to the 'now,' you can see that the lip proportions have changed. In the 'then' photo, her upper lip is slightly smaller than her lower lip. In the 'now' photo, the upper lip is actually larger than the lower lip.

I have stated many times on this blog that the natural lip proportions (with some exceptions) have the lower lip 1.5 times the size of the upper lip. Quite often plastic surgeons become overzealous in augmenting the upper lip, making it appear larger than the lower lip. This creates the all-too-common 'trout pout.' Whether Jennifer Aniston has had her lips done or not, I'm sure John Mayer would agree that her "Body is a Wonderland."

Mary Antoinette Rivero Defeated in First Fight In Olympics

Bad News!

Mary Antoinette Rivero lost in her first Olympic match in Beijing against Saric of Croatia. Rivero has no chance for the gold nor silver as a result of her defeat. However she still has a chance to get the bronze medal if Saric lands as one of the finalists in the women's welterweight competition.

Now, Filipinos must wish that Saric becomes a finalist in the women's welterweight competition for a chance of bronze medal for Filipino athlete Mary Antoinette Rivero.

Christina Applegate Breast Cancer and Reconstruction

As you may know by now, Christina Applegate has undergone a double mastectomy for possible breast cancer. She has the BRCA1 gene, which is a marker for high breast cancer risk. Ms. Applegate elected to undergo a prophylactic mastectomy, essentially removing all her breast tissue in order to prevent a potentially deadly cancer from appearing. In an interview, she stated that the next eight months would be spent undergoing breast reconstruction surgery.

What reconstructive surgery may she be having? It sounds to me that she is probably going to undergo breast reconstruction using breast implants. This process can take several surgeries. Most commonly, temporary breast implant expanders are placed at the time of the mastectomy. These implants are gradually filled over several months to expand the remaining skin and muscle. When they are the desired size, then another surgery is performed where the expander implants are replaced with permanent breast implants. Usually a few months later the nipples are recreated during a third surgery. The final step is often tattooing of the nipples and areola, in order to get the darker color of the real thing.

I wish her the best in her recovery and future treatments. I thought she was great in Married with Children.

Cancer-Free Christina : )

Christina Applegate is 100% clear of cancer! The Samantha Who actress had a double mastectomy three weeks ago to completely kill the disease. Her reasoning, she tested positive for the breast cancer gene BRCA1. Appearing on Good Morning America this morning, she described her emotions as this, "Sometimes I cry. Sometimes I scream, and I get really angry and I get really into wallowing in self-pity sometimes, and I think it’s all part of healing."

She will be going through reconstructive surgery for the next eight months in which she says, "I'm gonna have cute boobs till I'm 90."

Last night kicked off the season 4 premiere of The Hills and there were no dull moments.

Looove Whitney, Doug's a hottie, Lauren's always the peacemaker, (at least she's trying) as far as Audrina and Lo's friendship goes, opposites don't attract this time, still can't stand Heidi and Spencer, um and how big is Lo, LC and Audrina's house?!

From the Laguna days to this, I never thought I'd say this, but I'm gonna have to take Audrina's side on this one. Sorry Lo.

California Senate Approves "Donda West Law"

The California Senate has approved, by a margin of 37-1 the Donda West law, named after Kanye West's late mother. This law makes it mandatory for anyone undergoing a cosmetic surgery to have a history and physical performed prior to surgery.

Ho hum. Most plastic surgeons already do this. Instead of enacting unnecessary laws, why not limit plastic surgery to those who are actually trained at it? The California legislature has recently approved a bill allowing oral surgeons (DDS dentists) to perform all sorts of facial plastic surgery. How ridiculous! You wouldn't want me performing your root canal, so why have an oral surgeon do your facelift?

Sorry for the lack of updates. It's been a whirlwind past couple days. Tuesday afternoon I flew to L.A. to film a television pilot, returning Wednesday evening. I've been in surgery all day today, so I just haven't had time to post anything!

I did think that a woman’s menstrual blood has no use at all. I thought of it as a waste product- a dirty thing that a woman’s body excretes. But I could be wrong after all. Day 5 Beijing Olympics and Philippines Still has no Medal

It's day 5 in the Beijing Olympics and the Philippines still has no medal. Not even a bronze medal. Few athletes have not made it. There some Filipino athletes that are yet to compete in the different sports or events in the Beijing Olympic Games. I hope we can get a medal in the coming events. A Gold Medal is hoped for. But a silver or bronze would do if getting gold is just too tough to accomplish. Let's support Filipino athletes in our prayers.

Fun Flirting Game

Movies about love and romance are really nice to watch especially if you watch them together with your lover. I tend to memorize some movie lines unknowingly. I’m a romantic person I guess.Movie writers are clever at writing really good lines for a movie. Have you seen the movie “Runaway Bride”?

Remember this line:

“I guarantee that we’ll have tough times and I guarantee that at some point one or both of us will want to get out. But I also guarantee that if I don’t ask you to be mine, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life ‘cause I know in my heart you’re the only one for me.”

Not so sure if I got it right, but more or less that was the movie line. That’s a very romantic statement for me. I did try using that at Extreme Style by VO5’s Ultimate Flirting Championship Game. And it worked in attaining the Victory Hair! It was a fun game. You should try this flirting game. Just think of nice movie lines that you could use or just be creative and make an original flirting line to use. You will love the game. It's putting your flirting skills to the test.

Update of the Acupuncture Facelift from the Beauty Brains

A fantastic site, The Beauty Brains, has a good post on the facts behind the Acupuncture Facelift. Their bottom line:



If you’re going to get a cosmetic procedure done, don’t waste money on acupuncture. Save up for a full blown face lift. At least that will be done by a reputable doctor and has been proven to work. And if surgery isn’t something you want to do, stick to the high quality facial products you can buy at your local drug store. They’re just as good as the department store products.



I would agree with just about everything they state in the article, except for one thing. I strongly believe that physician-prescribed skin care products, such as Obagi Nuderm, are much more effective and powerful in reversing aging than local drug store or department store products. R.I.P. X 2

Sadly this past weekend the entertainment world lost two superstars.

Actor and comedian Bernie Mac, 50, died Saturday morning due to complications of pneumonia. Mac had been hospitalized since July 24 and there had been many rumors going around about the condition of his health. His wife of 31 years, Rhonda, and their daughter Je'Niece were with him when he passed.

Singer and songwriter Isaac Hayes, known for the theme song from Shaft, collapsed at his home in Memphis on Sunday. He was taken to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead soon after. The soul man was 65.

Ironically, both Mac and Hayes had already started filming scenes for the movie Soul Men, in which they were both appearing in.

You both will be greatly missed!

Lindsay Davenport Uses Juvederm and Botox

In an exclusive interview with Make Me Heal.com, new Juvederm spokesperson and professional tennis player Lindsay Davenport admits to having both Juvederm and Botox injections...and loving them:

No one should have to feel like their skin is aging faster than their body. Thanks to JUVÉDERM I just look my age. And my theory is, when I find something that works, I want to share it. That’s why I’m talking freely about my JUVÉDERM treatments....I love the results of Juvederm. I’ve also used Botox Cosmetic which has provided great results as well!

We perform Juvederm injections in my practice quite often. It injects very nicely, and some studies have shown longevity of the product for a year. Overall, my only complaint about Juvederm is that the syringe size is 0.8 cc, and not 1.0 cc like Restylane. There are so many other fillers on the market nowadays (including Perlane, Prevelle, Artifill, Radiesse, and several others) that it's easy for a patient to be confused about what to use. An easy recommendation for patients is that you can't go wrong starting out with Restylane or Juvederm, as these are the two 'workhorses' of filler products, in my opinion. Some of the other fillers are more 'niche' players (kind of like a doubles specialist in tennis).

If I Were a Vegetable

Most kids don't like vegetables especially the green leafy ones. I think most kids are really like that. In fact remembering my younger years, I'm no different. I don't like vegetables too. Presently I am still picky when it comes to vegetables. There are certain vegetables that I don't like. But I asked myself, what If I were a vegetable? What kind of vegetable would I be? That' not a tough question. I already have an answer even before when I was still a youngster. I want to be a squash. Squash because it's delicious. I think most kids like eating squash. There are plenty of ways to cook it too. If I were a vegetable squash, I'm sure kids will love me.

Anyway, how exactly do you convince kids to eat vegetables? This one is tough. But you can incorporate veges to other food or drinks that kids love without them noticing that there's vegetables in what they're eating. That's a clever idea. Or you can let your kids watch movies or videos or cartoons on vegetables. If you create in them that special interest in adorable vegetable characters you might just make them like to eat vegetables. Take a look at sproutwells video for instance. You can share this video with your kids anytime. Your kids will like it.

Miriam Quiambao Poses for Playboy Philippines

Finally, Miriam Quiambao is gracing the covers of Playboy Philippines.

That's a daring photo of her in the cover but I think many would want to see her with less clothes on. I haven't seen the Playboy Philippines August 2008 issue. Well, maybe there are more sexier photos of Miriam inside the Playboy magazine. I'd post the pictures if I get them.

Now that Miriam Quiambao is getting sexy for the magazine, will we see more of her in daring pictures. Will she go totally naked for the camera? Can't wait to see more of Miriam.

Fullness In, Tautness Out - Old News?

The Early Show on CBS had a segment this morning explaining the "new" trend in plastic surgery: Adding volume instead of just lifting. They explained that adding fullness to the cheeks is a key component of reversing aging and creating the most naturally youthful look possible.

Is this old news? When I did my aesthetic surgery fellowship with Dr. Richard Ellenbogen five years ago, the importance of volume enhancement in facial rejuvenation was the most important thing he taught me. We even published an article in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal about it, entitled the Volumetric Facelift. Click here for the article.

I strongly agree that adding fullness into a face is an extremely important part of reversing aging. I teach my patients that aging is a 3-Dimensional process. The best methods for volume addition are surgical facial fat grafting or nonsurgical Sculptra injections (not approved by the FDA for general cosmetic use). These are some of my favorite procedures to perform, as the results can be very natural and very powerful.

What I'd Bring if the World is Ending?

I love surfing the internet. I love watching movies. I love playing games with my computer. Obviously, if I have to bring one thing with me to another planet in case this world am living right now is coming to an end, that would be my laptop. Who knows there might be a wifi in the other planet. Hehhee. Just kidding. But seriously a laptop is what i'd bring. I can watch movies, play, listen to music, and even browse through all the photos of my loved ones.

You might be thinking, why am I talking about this. There's this game called Tabula Rasa by Richard Garriott, a private citizen who has travelled into space. The Earth is destroyed in the game by global warming, bio terrorism, etc, which in reality is actually starting to take place. Now, not every human person is saved. There are only few ones who'll get lucky to be saved.

That's already interesting. But it gets more interesting, because if you play the game you can have your messages saved on the game. Your messages will be accessible worldwide by other users. The archive of humanities will be stored in "The International Space Station" by Richard Garriott, on October 6th. That's so cool.

Philippine All Stars Wins 2008 World Hip Hop Championship

Another reason for Filipinos to celebrate and rejoice. The Philippine All Stars won the gold medal in the 2008 World Hip-Hop Championship held last August 3 at Las Vegas, Nevada.

The groupd had a two minute performance with an aggregate score of 8.94 from 3 judges. They won largely due to the infusion of artistic steps choreography. Mabuhay Philippine All Stars. You make the Philippines proud.

Madonna and Madamism?

Is Madonna turning into a Madame puppet-face? Cityrag.com has coined (or propagated) the term "Madamism," which is a process some stars undergo as they have too much plastic surgery.
